AbROAD to Japan: A Post-Japonism Manga Project

SMouTh’s AbROAD to Japan: A Post-Japonism Manga Project contributes to the intercultural understanding between Greece and Japan by highlighting the impact of Japan and its culture on the world of literature and art from the late 19th century to the present and into the future. The project is co-funded by the Japan Expo ’70 Commemorative Fund (2024)

ABROAD to Japan is a programme of intercultural communication that linkes the past with the present through four main actions:

  • Workshops in Larissa and other cities, aiming at the analysis and creative exploration of the work of artists and writers who have portrayed Japan in the past.
  • An action of mobility of artists from Greece to Japan, in order to contribute to the intercultural dialogue by artistically capturing their own contemporary impressions of the country.
  • Publication of an original manga in collaboration with LoudMouse Crew using the material produced during the project.
  • A multimedia exhibition at the new SYNERGEIO Culture Space in Larissa (Dec. 2024 – March 2025) with photos, texts and an original video, capturing the impressions of the artists who travelled to Japan in the framework of the project.
