History of the play

Oleanna was written by David Mamet in 1992, a year after the first sexual harassment trial in the United States. It was first performed in May 1992 at the Cambridge, Massachusetts by the Back Bay Theater Company. A year later it was staged at the Royal Court Theater directed by Harold Pinter, and in 1994 the play was transferred to the big screen. Since then, Oleanna has been performed all over the world provoking intense debate and reflection. As a renowned author, screenwriter and director, David Mamet stands out for his precise use of the American language but also for his insight into the relationship between language and human behaviour.

The story
The story begins when a university professor, John, receives in his office his student, Carol, who is desperate to pass her course. The professor proposes a series of meetings outside the educational process and the rules of the university in order to revise her coursework. This meeting will be the beginning of fierce conflicts with the two protagonists constantly changing the roles of the bully and the victim. Through the text and with David Mamet’s masterful writing, the anthropophagy caused by the desire for power emerges. The viewer often has to reconsider and reinterpret what he sees and what he feels about the heroes of the play, as countless questions arise in his mind. How can power change the one who gains it? Who defines the very essence of education? Who defines – if it is ultimately defined – the objective reality? In the face of the uncertainty and insecurity that the text evokes, one thing is certain: it allows for multiple readings.

“He says it was just a lesson. She says it was sexual harassment. Whoever you believe, you will be mistaken”
David Mamet

The performance lasts approximately 90′
