Open discussion about prison

Open discussion about prison

  • What comes to mind when we hear the word “prison”?
  • Who do we think of when we talk about prisoners?
  • Do we ever try, even in our imagination, to see things from the other side of the walls? Do we wonder what daily life in confinement is like?
  • If we do, where do we get our images from? If we don’t, why do we avoid it?

On Thursday 19th of March at 6.30 pm we invite you to SMouTh’s workshop space (17 Tsimiski Street) for an open discussion aiming at raising more questions than giving answers.
The discussion is part of the project titled “Young People Talk About Prison” (https://snfphi.columbia.edu/el/projects/breaking-the-silence-young-people-speak-about-prison/ Facebook group: https://web.facebook.com/groups/ 1041450404841983), which is supported by the Initiative for Public Humanities (SNFPHI) at Columbia University (USA) and draws on the three-year ethnographic study conducted by our guest, Antigone Efstratoglou, at six Second Chance Schools operating in an equal number of prisons.

Α FEW WORDS ABOUT OUR GUEST

Antigone Efstratoglou has been working as an educator in adult prisons since 2017. She has taught at the Second Chance Schools operating in the prisons of Korydallos, Larissa, and Domokos, as well as at the prison hospital. She recently published a book titled “Learning (in) Prison,” which includes, among other things, excerpts from the life stories of imprisoned students and lessons she observed at six prison schools as part of her three-year research project conducted with the support of the Greek Open University. The book is available for free download on the publisher’s website
