FLY
(ages 15+)
The contemporary theatrical monologue Fly by award-winning author, playwright and screenwriter Stella Zafeiropoulou is presented by SMouTh for six shows. Under the direction of Dimitris Tsoumanis, the play highlights the tragicomic figure of a person who chooses to be different in a world that insists on remaining the same. With intense emotional charge and a contemporary theatrical perspective, the play attempts to capture the constant inner disorientation that each of us experiences, opening a dialogue about identity, freedom, and the place of the individual in society. Fly means “flight” but also “insect.” Wings may be small, just as the finger pointing at the moon.

THE STORY
A kaleidoscopic monologue, where reality and fantasy, self-deprecation, humor, and raw honesty shape different versions of the self. Between the desire for freedom and the desire to belong, Fly’s persona searches for its own identity without compromise. In the end, will it remain under the weight it carries or will it fly above it?
“I’ve seen a lot of pixies in recent years. They open their arms and try to fly. Some regret it at the last minute, and others make the big move: they spread their wings and fly.”
“Fly talks about those limbo people who feel like they don’t belong anywhere, with one foot on a ground that others made for them, and with the other foot ready to step on the ground and get the push they need to move forward. …When we are born our parents wish to see us as they desire. As if we are not ourselves. Or as if we come out with factory settings and will become like our mother and father. This “as if” contains the possibility, however that you may not become like anyone else. And why should you? That’s what Fly is about. A personal writing on a predetermined fate.” Stella Zafeiropoulou (source: Athinorama, November 2024)
