Voices of contemporary Greek cinema

The Synergy of Music Theatre (SMouTh) and Larissa Film Club are co-organizing a three-day tribute to contemporary Greek cinema, presenting the work of three important directors who are carving out distinct, personal paths in modern Greek filmography. Specifically, SYNERGEIO, culture space, will be hosting Petros Sevastikoglou with his film ELECTRA on Friday, October 17, at 9:15 p.m., Stella Theodoraki with her film FREE SUBJECT on Saturday, October 18, at 8:15 p.m. and Thanos Anastopoulos with the film THE DAUGHTER on Sunday, October 19, at 7:15 p.m.

A special feature of the three-day event is that the film screenings will be accompanied by live discussions (Q&A) with the filmmakers (the discussion on Sunday will take place via digital video call with the director) giving the audience in Larissa the opportunity to participate in an open dialogue on cinematic art and society, as well as to learn about the context that shapes each filmmaker’s perspective.

ELECTRA by Petros Sevastikoglou (Trailer)

Color, 90 min, 2014, Greece

Electra is a young woman who feels like a stranger in her own country, as well as in other countries. From Africa to Europe, the film is a puzzle that pieces together her identity. The story does not follow a chronological path but rather the emotional connections of the young woman. The past is reconstructed, the present takes shape and the future is erased. Electra’s journey is her country itself.

FREE SUBJECT by Stella Theodoraki (Trailer)

Color, 148 min, 2018

Iris, a professor at a School of Fine Arts, gives her eight students a free theme exercise with the aim of helping them mature during a period of crisis. The twenty-year-old students are excited by the idea of free choice and create an “imagination workshop” without restrictions. One of the students, George, gets the ball rolling when he accidentally finds Iris’s cell phone and bases his assignment on her life. The choice of a free topic as an exercise, but also as a research proposal, examines the ambiguous limits of individual freedom in contemporary Western societies.

THE DAUGHTER by Thanos Anastopoulos (Trailer)

Color, 87 min, 2012, Drama with thriller elements, Greek-Italian co-production

A 14-year-old girl, Myrto, decides to kidnap the eight-year-old son of her father’s business partner when the latter disappears from the face of the earth—apparently because of his debts. The young girl believes that her father’s business partner is responsible for his disappearance and is determined to do whatever it takes. The relationship that develops between the girl and the boy in the carpentry workshop where she has “imprisoned” him is the backbone of “The Daughter,” a film that contains scenes for strong nerves.

THE DAUGHTER, which narrates the story of how a girl resorts to extreme violence to defend her father from financial ruin, had its international premiere at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.
